Unconscious Communication: Shaping Leadership Dynamics

Unconscious communication, often overlooked yet profoundly influential, impacts every aspect of our interactions within teams and organisations. It encompasses the subtle cues and signals we give off, from our punctuality in meetings to the unspoken messages conveyed through our body language and responses.

As leaders, we hold a unique position of influence. Our actions and behaviours are constantly observed and mirrored by our team members, shaping the collective norms and culture of the group. While this can be a powerful tool for promoting positive behaviours and values, it also poses risks when our unconscious communication contradicts our intentions.

Consider the following scenarios:

1. Lateness to Meetings: Arriving late to meetings, even with valid excuses, sends a clear message to team members. It suggests that our time is more valuable than theirs, undermining trust and respect within the team. Moreover, it sets a precedent for tardiness and lack of accountability, potentially eroding the team’s overall effectiveness.

2. Overlooking Gossip: In the midst of office banter and gossip, it can be tempting to dismiss such behaviour as harmless. However, turning a blind eye to gossip sends a message that such conduct is acceptable. By failing to address gossip and negative chatter, leaders inadvertently contribute to a toxic work environment which can lead to mistrust and division.

3. Micromanagement: Micromanaging team members is a common pitfall for many leaders. While the intention may be to ensure quality and efficiency, micromanagement communicates a lack of trust in the team’s abilities. This can lead to disempowerment and disengagement among team members, limiting creativity and innovation.

Recognising the profound impact of unconscious communication prompts us to take intentional steps to tighten our communication practices.

So how do we do that?

Being Self-Led: Leadership begins with self-awareness and intentionality. Take time to reflect on your leadership style and values. Consider how your behaviours align with the culture you wish to cultivate within your team. Identify areas for improvement and commit to personal growth to lead by example. As a leader it is your responsibility to be constantly learning and growing and sharing this along the way.

Being Present: Demonstrate your commitment to your team by being fully present in meetings and interactions. Give your undivided attention, actively listen, and engage with compassion. By creating a space where team members feel valued and heard, you foster a culture of inclusivity and collaboration. Aka if you’re in a meeting, be fully in the meeting – no checking your phone or emails and allowing distractions to pull your attention away from the task at hand.

Setting Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries around your time and expectations. Communicate these boundaries to your team and uphold them consistently. By respecting your own boundaries, you reinforce the importance of respect and accountability within the team.

Unconscious communication exerts a powerful influence on leadership dynamics and organisational culture. By becoming more aware of our behaviours and their impact, we can create environments where trust, respect, and collaboration thrive. It starts with self-awareness, intentionality, and a commitment to leading by example.
