Embracing Failure: Cultivating a Culture of Possibility in Leadership and Life
You read it everywhere, “embrace failure!”, “fail fast!”.
And more important than the act itself, and notably overlooked, is the pre-framing of failing as being the greatest gift to a team, project or employee. That is, if they have cultivated the ability to spot the possibilities in the pockets of their problems.
There is always a multitude of possibilities lying in the pockets of your perceived problems. A team that knows this, doesn’t lose sleep, hair or sanity over the fact that a project didn’t go to plan. Instead they are refining, tweaking, innovating and improving performance for the future.
This ^ kind of behaviour is deeply imbedded within the golden thread of legacy leaving companies. Staff feel solid when it comes to their psychological safety within their teams and with their management. And when you feel psychologically safe, you are more innovative, productive, engaged and most importantly; happier at work.
So, that aside. How do you switch your focus from problems to possibility? How do you start to imbed this kind of culture within your leadership essence and therefore teams overall? Well, you start at the top. And if you’re reading this and you’re not in a position of management or authority – I encourage you to take this approach moving forward and watch how quickly you move into one.
Ask yourself: “what do I notice first – problems or possibility?”.
And I don’t mean only at work.
Let’s take a peep into your everyday life.
You don’t have time to stop on the way to the office to grab a coffee – end of the world or opportunity to prove to yourself that you’re innately driven and energised?
Your partner leaves their towel on the bathroom floor (again ????), reason for a morning argument or a slight inconvenience that can be brought up at an appropriate time from a regulated state?
Someone is trying to cut in front of you in traffic – opportunity to rage and beep or chance to flex your compassion and give grace to a fellow commuter?
You see, how you do one thing – is typically how you do everything. And someone that remains positive in a negative situation, is not naive. They are a leader. They are someone that despite the emotional reaction they feel, they have the capacity to respond intelligently and compassionately (which will always lead to more solutions… instead of creating more problems).
There are multiple opportunities every single day to flex your inner optimist and choose to see the possibilities within the perceived problems.
Of course, recognising problems and dealing with them accordingly is paramount to success in any measure – yet wouldn’t you want to do it with an upbeat attitude primed for refinement and progression over shame spiralling and wallowing in self pity?
Ya, we thought so.
Developing your ability to reframe situations and scenarios is the secret sauce when it comes to effective leadership. All of sudden, people want to share their challenges with you, because you’re viewed as a safe, supportive and proactive person.
